jesus_piercedSince the Sabbath was about to begin and in order not to wait for the slow death of Jesus, the religious leaders asked for the death of the crucified victims to be rushed by breaking their legs. Pilate sent the soldiers who first broke the legs of the two other criminals on opposing sides of Jesus.

“But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierceda Jesus’ side with a spear, bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. The man who saw ita has given testimony, and his testimony is true. He knows that he tells the truth, and he testifies so that you also may believe.” (John 19:33-35)

This passage declares two important theological truths. First, it indicates the death of Jesus occurred in his time when he gave up his life, for when the soldiers came to finish him off he had already given up his spirit. Second, the evangelist who was present at the foot of the cross verifies that at the moment of thrusting the spear on his side the last of his blood was shed, and then water flowed from his body. In this manner, the body of the Savior became a fountain of salvation for us. That blood which flowed from his body and sprinkled the soldier who pierced his side is the same blood which can make you clean from sin today. Jesus shed all of his blood to give us salvation, but you need to accept his sacrifice and ask him for the forgiveness of your sins in order to be made clean through his blood. Accept him today and allow him to sanctify you with the power of his blood.
