Chapter 17 of John’s gospel registers the last public prayer ade by Jesus before his Passion. Knowing the short time he had before being handed over to die, Jesus lifted up his voice to pray for his disciples starting with these words:

jesus-praying“Father, the hour has come.b Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal lifeb to all those you have given him. Now this is eternal life: that they know you,a the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.”

(John 17:1-3)

We know Jesus invoked these words at the beginning of his Passion because John 18:1 indicates that after his prayer we left with his disciples toward the Garden of Gethsemani.  Thus, the hour which had finally arrived and had been anticipated since the beginning of his ministry, was the hour of his death. But what is most significant about these words is the declaration that it would be through his glorification and his return to the FatherPero lo más significante de estas palabras es la declaración de que sería a través de su glorificación y su retorno al Padre que Jesús concedería vida eterna a sus seguidores.
